Introduction

cTeach3Age Concern Dorchester has been involved in teaching one-to-one computer skills since 2000 and has become the leader in computer tuition for older people in Dorset. This has been recognised by way of grants awarded to carry on this unique service by the Learning and Skills Council and Age Concern England. It started with just one volunteer, an old computer, and many willing learners.

The service has grown, with more volunteers coming forward, more computers being acquired, and an increased number of people wanting to learn. We offer a wide range of courses specially designed for anyone over 55 years with your own personal tutor.cTeach1

The Computer Training Service has 20+ volunteer computer tutors, working in the fully accessible Mouse House and Internet café which is equipped with four workstations, large flat screens and adaptive equipment. Tutors also teach in local libraries, residential homes and the “At Home” service for the housebound.

The Mouse House Internet Café is open on Wednesday morning for practice. During Silver Surfer Week and throughout the year the Mouse House Team can be found putting on big screen presentations on all aspects of computing from what a modern PC can do; virtual flights around the world with Google Earth and an in-depth look at digital photography and researching family history.

Age Concern Dorchester’s Computer Training Service is part of the network of UK online centres, offering an accessible Broadband connection for anyone over 55 years, in a non-threatening environment. See our “Computer Training” article by returning to the Computers page.
