I started work as a dress maker at Genges, on the corner of Trinity Street when I 15 in 1926. We worked upstairs – the dress makers, the coat hand, the sleeve hand and us apprentices – seven or eight of us.

From Bridport to Bovington

I learnt my trade at Brit Engineering in St. Andrews Road in Bridport. There’s not many of us left now. Then I went into the Fleet Air Arm. We used to do motor cycle road racing round Bovington Camp.

I had my first job when I was 14 years old and went into service when I was 17 years old. I worked for a family at Milborne Port and to begin with, I worked in the big house for an elderly lady who had two sons and two daughters. I had a half day off every other Sunday and half a day off in the week.

I used to go out on the milk round every day in the van. One day I called on a customer who had a nice dog called Carlow. He would always come out and greet me but on this particular day he didn’t come. I was greeted by the woman pointing a sword at me.
