Breakfast Club

meusliAge Concern Dorchester have launched a new ‘Breakfast Club’ for their day centre members. On Wednesday 6th May, day centre manager Sally Goss, assistant Judy Wilding and volunteers served a variety of breakfast items to promote healthy eating by adding to their clients’ usual morning snack of biscuits with healthier options including cereal, toast, porridge and fruit juice.

breakClub2Sally Goss stated, “We used to only serve coffee and biscuits when our clients arrived for the day, so we are pleased to introduce a new breakfast club which will hopefully ensure that the day centre members, who may usually skip breakfast, will have the option to purchase something substantial.”

The launch was successful as many Rowan Cottage day centre members were eager to taste the new breakfast options: “I really enjoyed my bowl of muesli, even though I usually have the time to get breakfast at home, it’s nice to have the option here so I can have a morning meal with friends” said Hilda Holmes, a regular client who was tucking into a bowl of muesli.

breakClub1Age Concern Dorchester received the funding for this new initiative from the ‘Partnership for Older People’s Project’ after identifying a need for healthier eating in the morning, which is essential to the well-being of older people…

Social work student Holly Tilling suggested:

“I feel that giving our clients the option of a healthy breakfast will help to prevent ill health as many of us are aware that having a well-balanced diet improves many aspects of your health. Even if a client only chooses to purchase a glass of orange juice it is better than a chocolate biscuit”,

The ‘Breakfast Club’ will be available from 9.15am to 10.30am on Monday, Tuesday, Wednesday and Friday. For further information regarding any of our services please telephone 01305 269444.
